EC signs MoU with TikTok to curb election misinformation

KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 4 Officiating Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari has said that preparations are being carried out in a planned manner to prevent the possible misuse of technology in the upcoming election. The election to the House of Representatives (HoR) is scheduled to take place in a month, on March 5. Addressing a programme organised by the Election Commission (EC) to exchange a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with representatives of TikTok on Wednesday, he stated that the historic agreement would play an instrumental role in ensuring a clean and responsible digital environment for the HoR election. Bhandari expressed confidence that the agreement would help minimize violations of the election code of conduct and curb the spread of misinformation. He also thanked TikTok for extending its support free of charge to prevent the misuse of its platform during the election period. On the occasion, EC Joint-Secretary and Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai and TikTok's Head of Public Policy and Government Relations, Ferdous Al Mottakin, exchanged the MoU. The Commission said the initiative would help maintain the integrity and impartiality of the HoR election. It would further support the EC's efforts to control misleading and harmful content that could influence the electoral process.
