KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 11 Blue Water Intelligence (BWI) has launched machine learning-enabled river flow forecasting and early warning services in Nepal under the HydroNepal Project, marking a key milestone in Nepal–France cooperation under the Nepal–France Green Road Map. The launch event, held in Kathmandu, brought together stakeholders from Nepal's water, energy and research sectors and featured a panel discussion on water and energy security in the context of climate change. The HydroNepal Project, initiated in February 2025 with support from the French Ministry of Economy, Finance, Industrial and Digital Sovereignty and funded by FASEP, is being implemented in partnership with the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), which serves as project partner and beneficiary. Following completion of its development phase, BWI's river flow forecasting and early warning systems are now operational in four major river basins - Upper Karnali, Marsyangdi, Trishuli and Dudh Koshi. The system integrates Earth observation data, artificial intelligence and hydrological modelling to strengthen hydropower planning and operations, disaster preparedness and water resource management. French Ambassador to Nepal Virginie Corteval said the initiative reflects French technical expertise in hydrological modelling working alongside Nepal's dynamic river systems to support economic growth and disaster preparedness. BWI Hydrologist Dr Anil Khanal described the deployment as a milestone demonstrating the role of international cooperation and digital innovation in enhancing Nepal's water and energy resilience. He said the company is prepared to expand services beyond the initial four basins and collaborate with additional public and private sector partners. The event was attended by NEA Managing Director Hitendra Dev Shakya; Tribhuvan University Vice-Chancellor Prof Deepak Aryal; senior officials from the Department of Electricity Development; representatives from ICIMOD, the Institute of Engineering, IPPAN and NIC Asia Bank, among others. The programme concluded with a panel discussion where government agencies, private sector representatives and researchers discussed the use of Basin Intelligence technology to address water-related challenges amid growing climate risks. Blue Water Intelligence is a French basin digitization operator providing AI-powered hydrological forecasting services to governments and companies across South Asia, Africa, Central America and Europe.
