KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 17 The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Government to ensure adequate logistical and security arrangements for the House of Representatives member election scheduled for March 5, following concerns over shortages of essential materials. The directive came after the Commission held discussions on Monday with the chiefs and senior officials of Nepal's four security agencies regarding election preparedness and the protection of human rights during polling. During the meeting, NHRC Chairperson Tap Bahadur Magar sought detailed updates on measures taken to guarantee the safety of voters, candidates, election observers, monitors and polling staff. He emphasised that safeguarding fundamental rights and ensuring a secure environment are integral to conducting free and fair elections. Senior security officials, including representatives from the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal and the National Investigation Department, informed the Commission that preparations were progressing with high morale despite shortages of necessary support materials. In response, the Commission instructed the Government of Nepal to make appropriate arrangements for essential communication, security and transportation equipment required for election security. It underscored that adequate logistical support is vital to ensure the polls are conducted in a free, fair and fear-free atmosphere. The interaction brought together Commission members, its Secretary and the heads of the respective security bodies.
