KATHMANDU, MARCH 5 Following the six months of the Gen Z revolution last September (September 8 and 9), a peaceful House of Representatives election was held today. Voters in the valley appeared engaged and enthusiastic about voting. In a bid to understand their experience The Himalayan Times spoke with several voters in the valley, and except for a few exceptional cases, the majority of them said the same thing: 'We voted for change.' Bibhusha Bajagain, 26, stated, 'I voted for change, which the country desperately needs. I hope that this election will transform both the parliament and the country.' Shiva Budhathoki, 58, expressed frustration with traditional forces as soon as THT requested his response. According to him, traditional parties have pushed the country backward. 'They have harmed industries and politicised bureaucracies and positions. Thus, I voted for democracy and change this time,' he stated. Ankit Kunwar, 32, also said he voted for change. 'If I had made a better decision, I would have been in a better situation. I do not want to repeat the same old mistake so that future generations do not suffer,' he said. Bhuwan Shrestha, 39, argued that he had no option other than accepting the change. 'Thus, I opted for change this time.' Krishna Kaji Shrestha also expressed that this time he could not go against change. 'We have done our job now. Let's see how it turns out to be.' Sarita Shrestha and Puran Manandhar (spouse) said that they have also accepted the change, but the new government now must act against corruption and the corrupt. Durga Kharel, 75, argued that the younger generation should take over. Old people should take rest and guide youth. They are more energetic and creative. 'Look at these old guards; we have a water shortage in Kathmandu. We have yet to taste the Melamchi water. However, they continue to add taxes and raise the bills. I also want health insurance to be effective. I have not been able to receive proper service,' she stated. 'Therefore, I voted for my grandson's generation.' In the meantime, a number of voters who chatted with THT after 5:00pm commended Prime Minister Sushila Karki's efforts, saying that she managed the election in spite of multiple challenging circumstances. Shiva KC, on the other hand, praised Prime Minister Karki for conducting the election successfully. He emphasised that many people argued and taunted her, doubting her abilities. 'But she deserves the respect of Nepalis for conducting the election,' he added. Bhim Devkota argued that Gen Z's demand was not an election. However, the election has created an escape route for the country. 'Sushila Karki should be commended for what she has accomplished despite challenging circumstances,' he told THT. 'We must thank her. However, the road ahead will not be easy.' Dhruva Khatiwada, 55, highlighted the safe and secure side of the election. 'People could vote at ease. Everything about the election was commendable,' he said, adding, 'People also want safety and security. Until two weeks ago, people had reservations about the election, but it was carried out successfully. We must never forget her contribution to the country.'
