Jagdish Kharel wins Lalitpur-2 by landslide

LALITPUR, MARCH 8 Jagdish Kharel of the Rastriya Swatantra Party has won Lalitpur Constituency-2 by a massive margin, capping a political move that saw him resign as Communications Minister in the interim government to contest the March 5 elections. Kharel, who stepped down from the cabinet specifically to stand in this constituency, secured 39,941 votes, more than five times the tally of his nearest rival. Prem Krishna Maharjan of the Nepali Congress finished second with 7,420 votes, followed by Ujiyalo Nepal Party candidate Rajaram Tandukar with 5,547 and CPN-UML candidate Prem Bahadur Maharjan with 4,536. A total of 23 candidates from political parties and independents contested the seat. According to Election Officer Samjana Simkhada Pudasaini, 61,975 voters cast their ballots in the constituency out of 89,082 registered voters, 31,035 women and 30,940 men.
