NEPSE hits second circuit breaker after 5% surge

KATHMANDU, MARCH 9 The Nepal Stock Exchange triggered a second circuit breaker on Monday as election-driven investor optimism sent the benchmark NEPSE Index surging 135.72 points, or 5 per cent, to 2,848.22 points, halting trade for the second time in the session and forcing a 40-minute suspension. Trading had barely opened when the first circuit breaker was triggered within minutes, as the index jumped 108 points, or 4 per cent, to 2,821.10 points. Markets resumed at 11:21 after a mandatory 20-minute halt under NEPSE regulations. But buying pressure continued unabated, pushing the index past the 5 per cent threshold and triggering the second automatic suspension. Under NEPSE regulations, a 4 per cent movement within the first hour triggers a 20-minute halt, a 5 per cent move within two hours triggers a 40-minute halt, and a swing of 6 per cent or more at any point during the session results in a full-day closure. Trading is set to resume after the 40-minute suspension concludes.
