KATHMANDU, MARCH 12 The alleged rape and murder of 16-year-old Inisha BK has shocked the nation, with several prominent figures, leaders and netizens using the hashtag #justiceforinisha in social media to express their outrage and demand justice for the victim. 'How many more daughters and sisters have to die before our laws actually take actions? These monsters don't hesitate because they don't fear the consequences,' wrote Aziz Malik, an X (formerly known as Twitter) user. 'No more excuses, no more 'mercy' for the merciless. We demand real justice for Inisha BK. #inisha #Nepalgoverment.' Gen Z Front Nepal said 16-year-old Inisha BK of Surkhet was raped and murdered. 'The government and police administration must take this incident gravely and punish the culprits to the fullest extent of the law,' reads the Gen-Z front Facebook post. 'Any kind of intervention to protect the culprits will not be acceptable. Need Justice. NO Ifs, NO Buts. #Justiceforinishabk #surkhet.' Yatish, another netizen, citing reports of a Dalit girl's rape and murder in Surkhet said the police should investigate properly and take action against the culprits. He further questioned how we have come this far as a society, citing statistics such as the fact that children aged 11 to 16 have been among the most affected by sexual violence in Nepal over the last five years. 'Twenty-one per cent of rape victims are Dalit women,' he stated in his post, adding that 80 per cent of rape cases involving Dalit women result in their murder. 'Although thousands of kilometres of roads are built each year, why hasn't our awareness of the safety of women, children, Dalits and other marginalised individuals and classes in society increased? What went wrong with our educational institutions? Where have society and the state failed? Where did we get it wrong?' He has further noted that it is necessary to conduct a thorough assessment and transformation. 'What role will the new government play in reducing crime rates? How can we create a situation in which we can trust the state and its investigating agencies to ensure justice for the victims after a crime has been committed? Citizens currently believe that without public pressure, the guilty are allowed to go scot-free. When will the state give them the feeling of 'its presence'? #JusticeforInisha.' 'I am deeply saddened by the criminal incident of the gang rape and brutal murder of Inisha BK, a 16-year-old girl from Surkhet. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the deceased girl and the bereaved family,' reads Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the Nepali Communist Party coordinator and former prime minister's FB post. 'I strongly demand the government and relevant authorities conduct a fair, prompt and effective investigation into the incident and take strict legal action against the perpetrators.' A protest was held in Maitighar Mandala today to demand a fair investigation into the rape and murder of Inisha BK, as well as justice for her family. The Caste System Elimination Front, the Scientific Socialist Organisation, the Gurbhakot youths and many other organisations staged the demonstration. In the meantime, a Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) team has been deployed to investigate the case, as per the Spokesperson for CIB, Shiva Kumar Shrestha. Speaking with THT, Shrestha said, 'A CIB team left Kathmandu today. They'll reach Surkhet tomorrow. The expert team has been dispatched to assist with the investigation of the case. Following the investigation, further action will be taken.' The District Police Office in Surkhet, Karnali province, has formed a separate team and is investigating the incident. Karnali Police Spokesperson Ram Prakash Shah said that they sought support from the CIB team for expert investigation. 'The team will reach here tomorrow morning,' he told THT. 'Four people have been arrested based on preliminary findings from the investigation. An expert pathologist has completed the postmortem, but the body is still at the hospital for now. The father of the deceased girl was abroad in relation to foreign employment. He just got here this morning. Further decisions will be taken based on consultation.' Spokesperson Shah also confirmed that the arrested are minors. 'The accused are minors, according to their school records and other details. However, we have yet to confirm whether they have obtained citizenship,' he said. 'We are looking into their phone and text message records to check whether they knew one another for long.' Sixteen-year-old Inisha BK from Gurbhakot Municipality-6 had been living with her mother in Birendranagar-1. Initial media reports indicated that the Grade XI student had left her home around 8:00am on March 7 for a morning walk with her friends in the Janajagaran Community Forest in Birendranagar-4. However, her mother, speaking to the media, said that she had gone for tuition classes. Reportedly she encountered the four teenage boys on the way, who allegedly raped her in the forest. Her friends reported the incident to the police after finding her unconscious and bleeding profusely. According to police reports, the minor's genitals were damaged during the rape. The girl was transported to the provincial hospital, where the doctor pronounced her dead on arrival. A complaint has been filed against all four alleged culprits at the police station. After the complaint was filed, the police extended the remand for rape and manslaughter on Sunday and began the investigation. After the first six-day extension of their remand, they were taken to district court today for another extension.
