Biraj Bhakta Shrestha set to become energy minister

KATHMANDU, MARCH 27 Biraj Bhakta Shrestha is set to be appointed Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation. Shrestha, who was elected to the House of Representatives from Kathmandu Constituency-8 in the March 5 elections with 24,592 votes, had also won from the same constituency in 2022. He previously served briefly as Minister for Youth and Sports, where his initiatives to reform the sports sector and boost athletes' morale brought him into the spotlight. He began his political career as a proportional representation member of the Bagmati Provincial Assembly in 2017. Holding a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Shrestha initially worked in hotel and restaurant management and various development projects before becoming actively involved in social work following the 2015 earthquake. He later founded 'Force Nepal' and led environmental campaigns such as 'One Tree – My Responsibility,' which helped strengthen his grassroots engagement. Shrestha entered national politics through the Bibeksheel Sajha movement alongside Ujwal Thapa. With prior legislative experience and a stint in the Cabinet, Shrestha is now set to lead the Energy Ministry.
