KATHMANDU, APRIL 5 More than 7,000 online betting-related apps and websites have been shut down as part of the government's governance reform measures. The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), in coordination with internet service providers, has blocked illegal gambling platforms operating online. According to NTA Deputy Director Surya Prasad Lamichhane, service providers have been directed to identify and immediately disable such platforms. 'So far, over 7,000 URLs and apps have been closed,' Lamichhane said, adding that the authority received more than 50 complaints related to online betting over the past week via phone, email and other channels, all of which have been acted upon. The crackdown follows a Cabinet decision on March 27 that included shutting down betting-related platforms within 24 hours under its governance reform agenda. Nepal's Criminal Code 2074 prohibits betting, with offenders facing confiscation of stakes, up to one year in jail and a fine of up to Rs 10,000. (With inputs from RSS)
