Demolition drive continues along Manohara riverbank

KATHMANDU, APRIL 26 Authorities continued their drive to clear illegal settlements along riverbanks in the Kathmandu Valley, beginning demolition of huts at the Manohara riverbank in Bhaktapur on Sunday. A joint team of security forces, along with heavy equipment, was mobilised early in the morning, and demolition work started at around 9:00 am after settlers vacated their huts. According to police, around 1,300 personnel from Nepal Police and 600 from the Armed Police Force were deployed for the operation. The demolition targeted a settlement of around 777 huts built over time along the riverbank. On Saturday evening, seven illegally constructed concrete houses were also demolished. The operation had faced resistance from settlers, leaving 22 security personnel injured.
