Cloudy weather nationwide; rain, thunderstorms likely in most regions

KATHMANDU, MAY 3 The Meteorological Forecasting Division(MFD) has said that generally cloudy conditions will prevail across the country today, with rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning likely in several areas. According to the Division, moderate rain or snowfall accompanied by thunder, lightning and occasional hail is expected at a few places in the Himalayan and hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as at some locations in other parts of the country. One or two places in the hilly regions of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces may witness heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning. Tonight, the weather will remain generally cloudy nationwide. Moderate rainfall with thunder, lightning and windstorms is likely at some places in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, and at a few places in Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces. The country is currently under the influence of westerly and local winds. A low-pressure system over the eastern region, along with an east–west trough to the south of Nepal, is contributing to the prevailing weather conditions. Major city forecast In Kathmandu, moderate rain with thundershowers is expected both during the day and at night, with temperatures ranging between 22–24°C and dropping to 14–16°C. Pokhara is likely to witness moderate rain with thundershowers, with a higher probability of rainfall at around 60 per cent during the day. In Dhangadi, light rain with thunderstorms is forecast during the day, while moderate rain is expected at night with a higher probability of precipitation. Similarly, Biratnagar and Janakpur are expected to experience light rain with thunderstorms. Other cities including Nepalgunj, Bhairahawa, Dharan and Birendranagar are also likely to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. The Division has advised the public to remain cautious of possible impacts such as lightning, hailstorms and gusty winds.
