41 killed, 204 injured in disasters in first 22 days of Baisakh

KATHMANDU, MAY 6 At least 41 people have died and 204 others were injured in 868 disaster incidents recorded across Nepal in the first 22 days of Baisakh, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said on Tuesday. Lightning strikes proved the deadliest, killing 12 people, followed by fires which claimed eight lives, windstorms six, altitude sickness five, animal attacks three, and snakebite, boat capsizing, and landslides two each. A further one person died in a forest fire. Fires were the most frequent disaster type with 304 incidents, followed by windstorms with 161, forest fires 130, and lightning strikes 105. A total of 1,109 families have been affected. In the past 24 hours alone, four people died, 15 were injured, and 92 were rescued, the authority said. With pre-monsoon conditions persisting and weather remaining unsettled, the authority has urged the public to remain alert and make necessary preparedness plans.
