KATHMANDU, MAY 13 Bikram Timilsina, Minister for Communications and Information Technology, has said the government is prioritising reforms in the telecom and media sectors, backed by ongoing studies and policy initiatives. Speaking at a press meet at the ministry on Wednesday, he said the government is focusing on improving the quality, competitiveness and management of telecom services, despite challenges in addressing multiple sectors simultaneously. The minister clarified that 5G services will not replace 4G immediately, adding that efforts are underway to make 4G more effective while introducing 5G gradually. He said preparations have begun for spectrum allocation and distribution, with 5G rollout remaining a priority. Timilsina also said the government is studying the need for an additional mobile operator to enhance competition. He added that the process of exploring a third operator has moved forward alongside efforts to strengthen the overall telecom system. The ministry has been holding regular discussions with Nepal Telecom and Nepal Telecommunications Authority, with the government ready to extend necessary support. He noted that reforms are being pursued within existing legal frameworks, with a focus on transparency, particularly in billing systems and service management. The minister said the government is also studying the development of data centres and digital infrastructure, including the potential to position Nepal as a regional data hub by attracting foreign investment. He stressed that strict measures will be taken against misuse of public resources and corruption, urging stakeholders to report any irregularities. On media, Timilsina underscored the importance of independent and responsible journalism for strengthening democracy. He said policy improvements are being considered in areas such as advertisement distribution, media sustainability and journalists' welfare, adding that the government will ensure transparency in the allocation of public advertisements.
