Nepal, Thailand discuss stronger cooperation against cybercrime and trafficking
Focus on human trafficking, online scams, smuggling and intelligence sharing

KATHMANDU, MAY 16 Nepal and Thailand have discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation to combat transnational crimes, including human trafficking, cybercrime, smuggling and online scamming. According to the Embassy of Nepal in Bangkok, Dhan Bahadur Oli met Thatchai Pitaneelaboot, Director of the Special Taskforce Against Border-Related Cybercrime and Human Trafficking of the Royal Thai Police, on May 15. During the meeting, both sides focused on enhancing intelligence sharing, information exchange and capacity building between law enforcement agencies of the two countries. They also reviewed emerging trends in human trafficking, including the misuse of tourism visas and the use of Thailand as a transit point by traffickers. Thai authorities assured prompt action on information provided by the Nepali Embassy regarding trafficking cases. Ambassador Oli appreciated the cooperation extended by Thai authorities in rescuing and repatriating Nepali nationals trafficked to Thailand and neighboring countries. The discussions also highlighted concerns over the growing use of online scam networks in the region and stressed the need for coordinated efforts to rescue victims and dismantle such operations. Both sides agreed on the importance of institutionalising cooperation between security agencies and expanding collaboration in police training and capacity building in the future.
