KATHMANDU, MAY 17 The government has initiated measures to boost domestic sugar production and reduce reliance on imports. According to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, efforts are underway to promote improved sugarcane varieties and modern farming technologies in coordination with stakeholders. The Ministry also plans to enhance the production capacity of domestic sugar industries. The move follows India's decision to restrict sugar exports until September 30 due to domestic supply concerns. Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Gauri Kumari recently held discussions with sugar producers and relevant agencies to ensure market stability and uninterrupted supply. The Ministry said current sugar stocks held by industries, as well as by the Food Management and Trading Company Limited and Salt Trading Corporation Limited, are sufficient to meet demand for around eight months. Spokesperson Netra Prasad Subedi said the government is committed to maintaining supply and price stability, urging consumers not to engage in unnecessary hoarding of sugar and other essential commodities.
