Gurkha soldier to represent UK Armed Forces at NATO Chess Championship

Sherpa finished fourth in UK Armed Forces Chess Championship

KATHMANDU, MAY 23 Warrant Officer 2 Ngadi Sherpa of the Queen's Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment has been selected to represent the UK Armed Forces at the NATO Chess Championship to be held in Jūrmala, Latvia, from October 11 to 17. Currently serving with Headquarters British Gurkhas Nepal in Kathmandu, Sherpa earned the selection following an impressive performance at the recent UK Armed Forces Chess Championship. According to the British Gurkhas Nepal Communications Office, Sherpa secured fourth position among nearly 100 competitors from the UK Armed Forces and Ministry of Defence. He also finished second in the Army competition.

The UK Armed Forces Chess Association stated that Sherpa's participation would significantly strengthen the UK team at the NATO championship. Commander British Gurkhas Nepal Colonel Dan Rex praised Sherpa's achievement, describing it as a reflection of professionalism, determination and intellect that brought credit to the Queen's Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment and the wider Brigade of Gurkhas. The NATO Chess Championship, now in its 36th year, attracts around 100 competitors from nearly 20 NATO nations and is regarded as one of the most prestigious military chess events.
