KATHMANDU, JUNE 4 The Armed Police Force (APF) has seized 774 BYD electric vehicles imported through the Korala border point in Mustang on suspicion of customs and tax-related irregularities. According to APF spokesperson Bishnu Prasad Bhatt, the vehicles were taken under control from Jomsom in Mustang, Kusma in Parbat and Hemja in Kaski during a coordinated operation carried out on Wednesday night. Two additional vehicles were also seized from the Pasang Lhamu Highway in Nuwakot. Bhatt said the APF launched the operation after receiving intelligence about possible documentation irregularities and attempts to exploit tax rate changes around the budget announcement period. 'All 774 vehicles are BYD electric cars brought from China through the Korala border. They were not transported by carriers but were individually driven into Nepal, mostly by hired Nepali drivers,' he said. According to the APF, more than 300 vehicles were still parked at the customs yard near the border when the operation began, while the remaining vehicles had already been dispatched towards Jomsom, Kusma and Pokhara. Security personnel from APF units in Mustang, Myagdi, Parbat and Kaski were mobilized to intercept the vehicles. The seized vehicles are currently being held at multiple locations and will be handed over to the concerned authorities under the Ministry of Finance for further investigation. Bhatt said a committee is expected to be formed to determine the nature of the alleged violations and recommend further action. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for BYD said that the issue was related to incomplete documentation and said efforts were underway to resolve the matter. The company did not provide further details on the seizure or the timeline for settlement.
