KATHMANDU, JUNE 17 The world-famous Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trekking route has become more accessible and comfortable after Nepal Electricity Authority extended the national power grid from Jhinu Danda to Upper Sinuwa. The electrification project ends years of dependence on micro-hydro systems and alternative energy sources in the region, benefiting local residents, tourism entrepreneurs and trekkers. Hotel operators say reliable electricity will significantly improve services by ensuring uninterrupted access to mobile charging, internet and hot water facilities. The line extension, implemented at a cost of Rs 22.1 million, required electricity poles and transformers to be airlifted by helicopter due to the difficult Himalayan terrain. The authority plans to further extend the national grid up to Himalaya on the ABC trail in the next fiscal year. The development comes as the Annapurna region records unprecedented tourist arrivals. According to the Annapurna Conservation Area Project, 441,422 foreign tourists visited the region by the end of May this fiscal year, already surpassing last year's total of 278,113 visitors.
