KATHMANDU, JUNE 26 The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for June 30 on a habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of CPN-UML Vice-chair and former Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel, challenging his detention. The petition was filed on June 24 by his wife, Domaya Paudel, claiming that he is being held unlawfully. A single bench of Justice Shrikant Poudel has ordered the Office of the Attorney General to submit a written response by June 29 before the court hears the case the following day. Paudel was arrested in Surkhet on June 22 on charges of money laundering and was produced before the Special Court in Kathmandu the next day. The Special Court on Tuesday granted investigators permission to keep him in custody for seven days while the Department of Money Laundering Investigation continues its probe into the case. In the petition, Domaya Paudel has argued that her husband was arrested without evidence and has sought an order for his release. The petition has named the Special Court, the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Department of Money Laundering Investigation, and the District Police Office, Surkhet, as respondents.
