BIRGUNJ, JULY 5 Questions over the transparency of the police investigation into the seizure of 120,620 tramadol tablets in Parsa have intensified after the District Police Office omitted the name of the transport company involved from its official statement. The truck, bearing registration Ba Pra 03-001 Kha 3346, was intercepted by Gandak Police on June 22 on suspicion of revenue evasion after leaving a transport company in Birgunj. It was subsequently handed over to the Revenue Investigation Office in Pathlaiya, where a search uncovered the large quantity of tramadol hydrochloride IP-50 tablets concealed among cosmetics, batteries and pharmaceutical goods. The case was later converted into a narcotics investigation. According to sources, the truck driver, Sushil Ghale of Thaha Municipality in Makwanpur, told investigators during preliminary questioning that the consignment was being transported through a logistics company. Initial remarks by the then Deputy Superintendent of Police Hari Bahadur Basnet reportedly identified one transporter, while other sources have claimed the shipment had actually been dispatched through another logistics company based in Adarshanagar, Birgunj. However, the District Police Office's official press release made no mention of any transport company, triggering criticism over the transparency of the investigation. Business representatives have questioned why neither the sender nor the intended recipient of such a large quantity of controlled medicine has been publicly identified, arguing that transport companies routinely maintain records detailing consignments, destinations and recipients. The then DSP Basnet said the transport company's name was withheld because the investigation was still underway and authorities had yet to determine the ownership and final destination of the consignment. The District Police Office has not issued any further official clarification.
