Five booked in Rautahat hotel gang rape attempt case

Five people, including four Indian nationals, have been arrested over allegations of gang rape and attempted rape of a woman at a hotel in Rautahat, with police launching an investigation under Nepal's criminal law governing sexual offences.

RAUTAHAT, JULY 7 Police have arrested five individuals, including four Indian nationals, over allegations of gang rape and attempted rape at a hotel in Gaur Municipality, Rautahat. According to the District Police Office, the incident occurred at Sushma Palace Hotel in Gaur Municipality-2 at around 1 am on Sunday. A police team from the Gaur Customs Police Post was mobilised after receiving information from the survivor. The arrested are Santosh Raut, 25, of Gaur Municipality-2, and four Indian nationals from Muzaffarpur district in Bihar: Mohammad Tajuddin, 33; Jitendra Kumar, 37; Hasnain Alam, 38; and Alok Kumar, 34. Police said the arrests were made based on the survivor's complaint, and all five are being investigated on charges of rape and attempted rape. The suspects remain in custody while investigators collect evidence and complete the legal process. District Police Office spokesperson DSP Basanta Gautam said further investigation is underway. Rape and other sexual offences are criminalised under Section 219 of Nepal's Muluki Criminal Code, 2017. Under the law, where a man has sexual intercourse with a woman without her consent or with a girl child below eighteen years of age even with her consent, the man shall be considered to commit rape on such woman or girl child. Rape of an adult victim is punishable by seven to 10 years' imprisonment, while a conviction for gang rape carries an additional five years' imprisonment beyond the prescribed sentence. Nepal has also extended the statutory time limit for filing rape complaints. Following legal amendments, adult survivors can file complaints within two years of the alleged offence, while the limitation period for minors is two years after turning 18.
