KATHMANDU, JULY 20 The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has issued a fresh warning of heavy rainfall in several parts of the country on Monday, as the active monsoon system continues to raise flood and landslide risks. The department forecasts generally cloudy conditions nationwide, with light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning expected in many hilly and Terai districts. Light rain and snowfall are also likely at a few locations in the Himalayan region. Heavy rainfall is forecast at a few places in the hilly and Terai districts of Koshi and Sudurpashchim provinces. Isolated locations in Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali may also receive intense downpours, increasing the risk of landslides, flash floods and inundation. Weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled through the night. The DHM said moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is likely in Madhesh Province and across the hill and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini, while isolated heavy rain is possible in several districts. Major urban centres, including Kathmandu, Pokhara, Biratnagar, Dharan and Dhankuta, are expected to experience moderate rain and thundershowers during the day. Pokhara and Kathmandu have among the highest rainfall probabilities, at 80 percent and 70 percent respectively. The latest forecast comes as continuous rainfall has already triggered landslides, road blockages and flooding in several parts of the country. Authorities have urged residents of vulnerable settlements and travellers using major highways to remain vigilant and follow official weather and disaster advisories.
