If you were to ask me what was the very first line of communication that I wished I had made at my first Toastmasters meeting, it would have been something as simple as: 'Hello, this is Anamika Koirala'. Fear of being judged, fear of limitations, fear of boundaries we need to maintain in a formal setting might have been the reason why I had held back that day. Yet the experience remained with me as I continued to witness people hesitating to connect with people sitting right next to them. A few weeks back, I pitched the idea to our division Director, Sunetra Pradhanang, DTM, and he right away approved it, giving me the freedom to pick my team and host an event 'Coffee and Conversations'. All I had in mind was my first day at a Toastmasters meeting and how I could create more conducive environments for connection. On 18th July 2026, in my capacity as Division PR Manager for Division B, District 41 of Toastmasters International, I hosted the event. The motto was simple: hold a cup of coffee and connect with people. No formal setting. No agenda. No evaluators. Just people, coffee, and the freedom to talk. The invitation was simple and I believe it worked precisely because it was simple. Toastmasters from clubs across Division B, members of the district 41 leadership team, and beyond showed up, alongside guests who were curious about Toastmasters, all gathered in one relaxed, unscripted room where the only expectation was to show up and be present. A strong turnout of both seasoned Toastmasters and first-time guests exceeded our expectations. People who had never spoken to each other in a formal club meeting found themselves in easy, unguarded conversations. Members from different clubs found common ground. Guests who had only heard of Toastmasters finally got to experience it. There was laughter. There were photographs. And most importantly, there were connections of the kind that quietly outlast any single meeting or event. One highlight of the event was watching members from corporate and community clubs' team up with college students to solve a puzzle together. Titles disappeared. Busy schedules were forgotten. For those few minutes, it wasn't about hierarchy in Toastmasters, it was about two people figuring something out together, cheering each other on, laughing at wrong guesses, sharing in the small thrill of getting it right. That is where real networking happened, not through introductions and handshakes, but through shared effort and shared laughter. By the end of it, attendees were coming up to us, thanking the organizing team, telling us to do this more often. There was no formal seating, everyone mixed freely, willingly swapping journeys and stories with a kind of ease you rarely see in a room full of near strangers. However, if I had to pick the single most beautiful moment of the day, it would be the selfie game. People came together, cell phones in hand, clicking pictures with one another, making sure the hall looked a little brighter, one smile at a time. For me, the success of Coffee and Conversations only confirmed something I always believed deeply, both as a Toastmaster and an entrepreneur: growth, personal or organizational, happens fastest in spaces where people feel safe enough to simply be themselves. As a Toastmaster since 2022, first as a member, then as Club President of Acumen Toastmasters Club, and now as Area PQD for Area B1 and Division PRM for Division B, I have had the opportunity to see Toastmasters from multiple vantage points. Each level has taught me a version of the same lesson: leadership is not only about running efficient meetings or hitting milestones. It is equally about creating spaces where people want to show up, time and again, because they feel seen and welcomed. Coffee and Conversations was a small experiment in that direction. It did not aim to teach a skill. It aimed to do something more foundational, to remind everyone present that behind every speech, every evaluation, and every leadership role, there is simply a person looking to connect with another person. Every Toastmasters meeting runs on an agenda, and rightly so. It is through that structure that we practice, learn, and grow, both personally and professionally. Toastmasters have helped countless individuals reach milestones they once only dreamed of. However, at its heart, Toastmasters was never just about the agenda. It is about the people within it, people from every walk of life, brought together under the same rulebook, learning to find their voice, and every now and then, learning to simply say the most common word the world practices, 'HELLO'.
