KATHMANDU, JULY 30 Strong winds are expected to sweep across parts of the southern plains on Thursday, while heavy rainfall is forecast for parts of Koshi, Bagmati and Sudurpashchim provinces as monsoon activity remains active across the country, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) said. The department said the monsoon trough is positioned near its normal location, with monsoon winds influencing weather nationwide. Heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in the Himalayan and hilly districts of Koshi and Bagmati provinces, as well as the hilly region of Sudurpashchim Province during the day. Strong winds are also expected in parts of the Terai of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces. Most parts of the country are expected to remain generally cloudy, with light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms forecast in many hilly areas. Similar conditions are likely in parts of the Terai of Koshi and in a few places across Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces. Light to moderate snowfall or rainfall is also possible in some Himalayan districts. The department said rain is expected to continue into Thursday night, with heavy downpours possible in isolated areas of Koshi's hills and plains and the hilly regions of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces. Among major cities, Kathmandu is forecast to receive moderate rain with thundershowers, with temperatures ranging between 29°C and 31°C during the day. Pokhara is also likely to witness moderate rainfall with temperatures of 31°C to 33°C, while Biratnagar and Dharan have a 60 percent chance of rain. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 34°C to 36°C in Janakpur, Bhairahawa, Dhangadhi, Nepalgunj and Simara. The department has urged the public, particularly those living in areas vulnerable to landslides, flash floods and strong winds, to remain alert and follow weather updates.
