Over 1.8 tonnes of marijuana seized in Morang, Dhankuta; three arrested

KATHMANDU, AUGUST 2 Nepal Police have seized more than 1.8 tonnes of marijuana in separate operations in Morang and Dhankuta, arresting three people in connection with the cases. In Morang, police seized 1,033.484 kg of marijuana from a mini-truck during a security check at Sombare in Ratuwamai Municipality-10 on Saturday. According to the police, officers from the Area Police Office, Sijuwa, intercepted the vehicle (Ko 1 Kha 4373) travelling from Urlabari towards Ambari and recovered the contraband packed in 31 bundles. The driver, Umesh Tamang, 28, of Pakhribas Municipality-9, Dhankuta, was arrested. An investigation is underway. In a separate operation in Dhankuta, police seized 804 kilograms of marijuana from an abandoned house in Chaubise Rural Municipality-4 of Dhankuta district and arrested two men on charges of involvement in illegal drug trafficking. Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Superintendent of Police Narayan Ranjitkar from the District Police Office, Dhankuta, conducted a raid on Saturday afternoon and recovered the marijuana concealed in 48 plastic sacks inside the vacant house. According to police, the operation was launched after receiving information that the house was being used to store marijuana illegally. A search of the premises led to the recovery of the narcotics, weighing a total of 804 kg, SP Ranjitkar said. The seized marijuana has been taken into police custody and legal procedures have been initiated. Police have arrested Hari Prasad Ojha, 40, originally from Chhathar Jorpati Rural Municipality-4 and currently running a hotel in Chaubise Rural Municipality-4, along with Ashish Bishwakarma, 34, a resident of Chaubise Rural Municipality-4. Both suspects are being investigated under the Narcotic Drugs (Control) Act, police said.
