KATHMANDU, AUGUST 4 Dengue infections have spread to 72 of Nepal's 77 districts ahead of the peak transmission season, with 2,025 confirmed cases and two verified deaths reported so far this year, prompting health authorities to intensify surveillance and launch a nationwide awareness campaign. According to the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD), the infections were recorded between January 1 and July 31. Health officials warned that dengue transmission is expected to rise further during and after the monsoon and urged local governments to strengthen prevention and control measures. Jhapa has reported the highest number of infections with 204 cases, followed by Baglung (180), Sunsari (161), Palpa (116) and Kaski (110). Province-wise, Koshi has recorded the largest caseload at 568, followed by Gandaki (532), Bagmati (365), Lumbini (343), Sudurpaschim (103), Madhesh (72) and Karnali (42). In response to the growing risk, the EDCD has launched a three-month nationwide awareness drive under the slogan 'Shrawan, Bhadra and Ashwin: Three-Month Dengue Awareness Campaign.' The initiative aims to encourage communities and local governments to eliminate mosquito breeding sites before infections accelerate. The division has urged households, local bodies and construction sites to regularly remove stagnant water from containers, tyres, tanks and other places where mosquitoes breed. It said continuous surveillance and source reduction remain the most effective measures to prevent the spread of dengue during the monsoon months.
