KATHMANDU, AUGUST 5 Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in parts of six provinces on Wednesday as an active monsoon system continues to affect Nepal, raising the risk of landslides, flash floods and travel disruptions in several hilly districts. According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division, the highest rainfall is expected at one or two places in the Himalayan and hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, the hilly and Terai areas of Lumbini Province, and the hilly regions of Karnali and Sudurpashchim during the day. The heavy rain threat will persist into the night, with very heavy rainfall also likely in parts of Madhesh Province alongside Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is forecast across much of the country's hilly region and in several Terai districts. The department said the country remains under the influence of the monsoon, with the monsoon trough positioned slightly north of its normal location near the Terai belt, a pattern that continues to favour widespread rainfall. Among major cities, Pokhara faces the highest likelihood of persistent rainfall with an 80 per cent chance of heavy rain both during the day and at night. Heavy rain is also forecast for Jiri and Taplejung during the day, while Kathmandu is expected to receive moderate rain with thunderstorms and temperatures ranging between 27°C and 29°C. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas and travellers along hilly highways to remain alert, as prolonged rainfall could trigger landslides, inundation and localized flooding.
