KATHMANDU, AUGUST 7 Timber smugglers in Rautahat have turned to a specially modified bicycle to move freshly cut sal logs through the forest under cover of darkness, highlighting the changing tactics used to evade patrol teams. A forest patrol team seized the modified bicycle and 6.96 cubic feet of sal timber early Friday after encountering suspected smugglers in the forest area of Gujara Municipality-2, Maida, according to the Division Forest Office, Rautahat. The patrol team came across the group at around 3:00 am as they were transporting the log on the bicycle. The suspects abandoned both the bicycle and timber and fled when the patrol team approached. The seized timber consisted of one sal log measuring 6.96 cubic feet. Forest officials said the bicycle had been structurally altered, particularly around its rear section, to make it wider and stronger enough to carry the heavy log. The bicycle and timber have been kept at the Chocha Sub-Division Forest Office for legal proceedings, while officials are working to identify those involved. Division Forest Office chief Manoj Kumar Thakur said the modified bicycle demonstrated how timber-smuggling groups were adapting their methods to avoid detection. 'Finding a bicycle modified specifically to carry timber is a clear indication of the changing methods used in timber smuggling,' Thakur said, adding that those involved would be identified and prosecuted under prevailing laws. Forest officials said smugglers have been cutting green trees, turning them into logs and breaking them into manageable pieces before moving the timber out of forest areas at night.
