RAMECHHAP, AUGUST 10 With income from conventional farming becoming increasingly difficult to sustain household expenses, farmers in Ramechhap are turning to beekeeping as a low-investment source of additional income. Farmers are earning not only from honey but also from selling beehives, while the activity can be carried out in small spaces around homes and farmland. Beekeeping has been gaining popularity in rural parts of the district, where farmers keep hives in their yards and near fields and sell the honey in local markets. Farmer Chandra Manandhar said beekeeping had helped increase farm income while also benefiting agricultural production. Bees contribute to pollination, which farmers say can improve the production and productivity of fruit and other crops. Farmers, however, say further expansion of the business requires technical training in modern beekeeping technology, disease and pest control, hive management, honey processing and marketing. The District Agriculture Development Office, Ramechhap, said the growing interest in beekeeping was encouraging farmers traditionally dependent on subsistence agriculture to move towards commercial farming and greater self-reliance.
