Man arrested for allegedly taking money to secure detainee's release

SARLAHI, AUGUST 11 Sarlahi police have arrested a man for allegedly taking money on the promise of securing the release of a person held in police custody. Police said another person allegedly involved in the transaction has fled and efforts are underway to locate him. According to the District Police Office, Sarlahi, 40-year-old Awadhesh Chaudhary, also known as Bechain, of Bishnu Rural Municipality-4, was arrested on August 8 for allegedly taking money by claiming he could influence police officials to release a detainee. Chaudhary is accused of taking the money in coordination with Rajendra Rai, also from Bishnu Rural Municipality-4. Police said Rai has gone into hiding and is being searched for. DSP Bed Prasad Gautam, spokesperson for the District Police Office, said further investigation into the case was underway. Police urged the public to remain alert against fraud and illegal demands for money, stressing that all services provided by Nepal Police are free of charge. They also asked anyone seeking money in the name of police or engaging in similar activities to report the matter to police.
