KATHMANDU An estimated 250 to 400 wild elephants in Nepal rely on traditional routes to move between forests. But growing settlements, farmland and roads are increasingly encroaching on these routes, driving human-elephant conflict across the country. Protecting forests alone isn't enough - the corridors connecting them need protection too. Nepal's 10-year Elephant Conservation Action Plan (2025-2035) aims to protect habitats and corridors, reduce conflict and strengthen community-based conservation. Nepal also has around 200 captive elephants, making their welfare, care and management an important part of elephant conservation.
