KATHMANDU, AUGUST 27 The death toll from Wednesday's devastating Bhotekoshi River flash flood in Rasuwa has reached 177, while the government has expanded rescue and recovery operations across several flood-affected districts. According to Nepal Police, the dead include 41 women, 69 men, 10 girls and seven boys, while the identities of 50 victims have yet to be established. The bodies have been recovered not only in Rasuwa but also downstream in Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan, Tanahun and East Nawalparasi, indicating the far-reaching impact of the flood. The rescue operation has also continued on a large scale. Nepali Army spokesperson Rajaram Basnet said 336 people had been airlifted from Timure, Dhunche and Mailung in Rasuwa, including 45 foreigners from six countries. Around 4,000 Nepali Army personnel are involved in search and rescue, emergency treatment and relief distribution, Basnet said. Separately, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 37 rescue flights had been conducted so far, with 305 people rescued by helicopter. Government sets up 12 emergency teams The government has established 12 dedicated teams to coordinate rescue, relief and recovery operations following the disaster. The teams have been assigned responsibility for restoring communications and electricity, search and rescue, emergency health services, management and identification of bodies, missing persons and family support, relief supplies, airport and helicopter operations, road connectivity, damage and needs assessment, and coordination of international assistance. A separate team will coordinate the release of the names of people who have been rescued, remain missing or have died. The communications team has been tasked with identifying areas without connectivity and restoring services, while the power restoration team will arrange emergency supplies, including diesel and portable generators. The road and transport team will coordinate the installation of Bailey bridges, restoration of vehicular movement and traffic management in affected areas. Rs 25 million released for three districts The government has released Rs 25 million in immediate assistance to three affected districts-Rs 10 million each for Rasuwa and Nuwakot and Rs 5 million for Dhading, according to NDRRMA Under Secretary Ram Bahadur KC. Meanwhile, the government has designated three locations for collecting relief materials for flood victims. Relief sent from abroad by air will be collected at the National Emergency Warehouse at Tribhuvan International Airport, while two other collection points have been designated at the Nepal Army's Maithili Barracks in Battar, Nuwakot, and its barracks in Baireni, Dhading. The collected relief materials will be distributed according to the needs of affected communities, the authority said. Authorities have also urged those providing assistance to deliver relief materials only to the designated collection points or through the respective chief district officers.
