Flood danger may not be over: Experts warn of fresh debris flows, secondary floods

ICIMOD experts have identified unstable canyon walls and a partially collapsed Gangbhu glacier as the two main threats in the coming days.

KATHMANDU, AUGUST 27 The danger from the recent flood may not be over, with experts warning that unstable canyon walls and a partially collapsed glacier could trigger fresh debris flows and secondary floods in the coming days. Glaciologists and emergency response specialists from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) have identified the two hazards as the main risks following the recent flooding and earthquake activity in the area. The flood, which reached up to 10 metres in height, severely eroded the bases of steep rock and moraine slopes along the Lende Khola gorge. Satellite images have since detected micro-landslides, raising the possibility of larger rockfalls and landslides that could again block the river downstream. Experts have classified the instability of the canyon walls as a high risk. A second concern is the remaining mass of the Gangbhu glacier, where only part of a hanging glacier has collapsed. Planet Labs satellite imagery shows a steep collapse wall and a large crack at the point where the glacier detached. Experts have assessed the risk from the remaining unstable glacier mass as moderate, but warned that continued seismic activity or strong aftershocks from the morning earthquake could cause it to collapse into the gorge and trigger another wave. Meanwhile, Chinese and Nepali specialists are continuously monitoring nearby proglacial lakes using radar satellite imagery. The earthquake may have weakened the moraine dams holding back these lakes, prompting closer surveillance. Authorities have declared the downstream coastal areas of the Lende Khola, Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers high-risk zones. Residents and rescue teams have been strictly prohibited from approaching the riverbanks because of the possibility of sudden secondary debris flows and breaches.
