RAUTAHAT, SEPTEMBER 3 A TikTok offer to buy furniture allegedly turned into a digital bank theft after two men obtained a customer's mobile-banking password through screen sharing and withdrew Rs 47,198 from his account, police said. Rautahat Police registered an online fraud case against Suraj Prasad Yadav (20) and Bholendra Kumar Yadav (22) of Kathariya Municipality-3, Birti Prastoka. The suspects allegedly persuaded Baidyanath Kumar Yadav (45) of Siraha to share his mobile screen, allowing them to access his banking password. The victim traced the suspects' details through banking records and filed a complaint at the Area Police Office, Kathariya. A team led by Senior Police Sub Inspector Jay Prakash Sah arrested the two men. The Rautahat District Court has granted police six days' custody for investigation. Police later received information that some local representatives and intermediaries allegedly tried to persuade the victim not to file a complaint by offering to return the stolen money. Madhes Province Police Chief DIG Om Prasad Adhikari directed police to investigate the case seriously, citing possible involvement of other individuals or organised groups. Investigators are examining the technical aspects of the fraud, including use of bank accounts, mobile numbers, digital wallets and other platforms. Police are also probing whether the arrested men have links to wider online fraud networks. Local residents said similar incidents have occurred in Kathariya before, warning that attempts to settle cases informally could encourage rather than deter digital crimes.
