KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 12 Families of tour guides who were buried in massive floods in the Bhotekoshi River on August 26 said they felt ignored by the Isha Foundation, for which they had worked for over a decade to make the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra a success. At least 92 people from Sadhguru's Isha Foundation went missing in the devastating floods that swept through the Dudhkoshi–Trishuli corridors. 'But the Isha Foundation mentioned only its 80 clients missing in the floods as part of the tour, even refusing to mention the names of 12 other Nepali tour guides who were also part of the Kailash Yatra,' the families of the Nepali victims alleged. Ngima Chhemji Sherpa, a resident of Sotang village in Solukhumbu District, is mourning the death of Gumbu Sherpa, who was part of the tour. 'I lost my husband in the disaster, but the most agonizing part of the aftermath is that Sadhguru's Isha Foundation hasn't even considered Gumbu part of the Kailash tour,' the mother of two said. Gumbu had worked with Sadhguru's Kailash team for over nine years. 'Gumbu was the main guide who accompanied Sadhguru's team every year and made their Kailash Yatra successful,' Ngima Chhemji recounted. Gumbu was the sole breadwinner of his family. 'Nine-year-old Yangji and three-year-old Tashi always ask me about their father. What can I say to them, and how can I raise them now?' Ngima Chhemji added. The Isha Foundation earned millions of rupees every year by running the Kailash tour with support from Nepali guides like Gumbu. 'We heard Sadhguru always talked about human survival and well-being, but in our case, where is his humanity?' Gumbu's brother Pasang questioned. Like Ngima Chhemji, Padam Kumari, wife of Suresh Shrestha, also flayed the Isha Foundation for ignoring their support staff. Suresh's fate is still unknown after he was swept away by floods near Timure on August 26. 'Not a single word of sympathy was delivered to us from the Isha Foundation,' Padam Kumari, a lactating mother of a 14-month-old daughter, lamented. Suresh, a permanent resident of Solududhkunda Municipality, was assigned as a tour guide for Isha's team. 'We are shocked that his contribution was being ignored by the foundation,' Suresh's brother Bhupal said. On humanitarian grounds, the Isha Foundation must provide sufficient compensation to the victims' families, he demanded. Lila Basnet has already started the final rituals for Ratna Bahadur Rokaya, who was swept away by the Bhotekoshi floods. A resident of Bheri Municipality in Jajarkot, Ratna, the father of a 5-year-old daughter, had made many trips with Sadhguru to Kailash Mansarovar in the past. 'But no one from the Isha Foundation has approached his family to even condole his death to date,' Lila said. 'Why are they only talking about the 80, most of them NRIs, but not Ratna and other Nepali guides and support staff?' she questioned. Like others, Mina Simkhada, wife of Kapil Simkhada, who also went missing in the floods, criticized the Isha Foundation for its indifference. 'We all want their support in times of crisis, as our husbands lost their lives serving the Isha Foundation,' the victims' families demanded. Among those missing from Sadhguru's Kailash Yatra are Lang Ngima Sherpa, Sachim Adhikari, Kale Gurung, Anil Rana Magar, Bhanu Prasad Devkota, Dilli Bahadur Pantha, Sugam Silwal and Tek Bahadur Adhikari. They were all swept away in the Nepal–Tibet border areas while on a tour to Kailash Mansarovar. The Trekkers Society, which locally manages the Isha Foundation's Kailash Yatra, stated that all 92 who went missing in the floods were part of Sadhguru's Kailash Yatra. 'Why is the Isha Foundation reluctant to acknowledge the 12 Nepali guides in this grieving situation?' Jitendra Basnet, managing director of The Trekkers Society, said, adding, 'We are coordinating with the foundation to address the grievances of Nepali guides.' A representative of the Isha Foundation, however, said that 80 persons (77 participants and three volunteers) from the Isha Foundation went missing in the flood. 'As for the Nepali support staff, the foundation is discussing the issues with the local agency for further action,' he claimed. In the initial phase, the foundation is liaising with the families of the 80 including yatris and volunteers who directly reported to the Isha Foundation, while support staff were employed by the local agent, he clarified.
