KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 24 The Government of Japan has provided an emergency grant of US$1 million to support food assistance for communities affected by recent flash floods in Nepal through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). According to a joint statement, the funding will enable WFP to provide immediate support to flood-affected communities in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading, while also strengthening logistics for the government-led humanitarian response. Japanese Ambassador to Nepal Maeda Toru said the contribution was intended to support timely and coordinated assistance for people affected by the disaster and help communities begin the recovery process. WFP Nepal Country Director and Representative Riaz Lodhi welcomed the support, saying the additional resources would strengthen efforts to reach vulnerable families with essential assistance. With support from Japan and other donors, WFP has already distributed ready-to-eat food and two-week food assistance packages, including fortified rice, lentils, vegetable oil and iodised salt, to more than 15,000 people affected by the floods.
