KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 24 Nepal is promoting its tourism industry at the four-day Japan Tourism Expo 2026 in Tokyo, with the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) leading a delegation of nine private-sector travel, trekking and hospitality companies. The 12th edition of Tourism Expo Japan formally opened Thursday at the Tokyo Big Sight International Exhibition Centre under the theme 'Changing Forms of Travel.' Organised by the Japan Travel and Tourism Association, Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA), and Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), the event brings together 1,553 booths representing 1,420 companies and organisations from 74 countries and regions, along with all 46 prefectures of Japan. Organisers expect around 180,000 visitors over the four-day event, including participants visiting 597 international booths. At the expo, Nepal is highlighting its Himalayan mountain ranges, Lumbini, cultural heritage sites, biodiversity, trekking opportunities, nature tourism and wellness experiences in an effort to attract more Japanese travellers. The first two days of the event, September 24–25, are dedicated to business-to-business (B2B) meetings, involving more than 6,400 pre-arranged business meetings between buyers and sellers. Public-focused business-to-consumer (B2C) programmes will follow on September 26 and 27. According to NTB Senior Officer Pradeep Gaire, Nepali tourism companies began meetings with Japanese travel agencies from the opening day. Discussions have focused on tourism packages, travel services and visitor experiences, as well as updates on the situation following the recent Bhote Koshi floods. Nepali companies have also used the platform to reassure Japanese partners that key tourist destinations remain safe and prepared to receive visitors. Another NTB official, Yubaraj Gurung, said participation in the international expo shortly after the flood disaster provides an opportunity to communicate accurate information about Nepal's tourism readiness and recovery efforts. Throughout the event, Nepal's pavilion is providing visitors with information about major destinations through brochures, promotional materials and audiovisual presentations. The participating private-sector companies are Gauchali Tour and Travels, Sumekh Tour and Travels, Himalayan Guides Nepal Treks and Expedition, Langtang Ri Trekking and Expedition, Ghale Treks and Expedition, Buddha Maya Gardens, Rupakot Resort, Chhayadevi Complex (Aloft Kathmandu Thamel), and Gorkha International Travels. Nepal Airlines Corporation is also participating through a dedicated pavilion.
