KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 25 Continuous heavy rainfall since Thursday has severely disrupted road connectivity across Nepal, with landslides, flooding and rising river levels blocking major highways and prompting authorities to impose widespread night-time travel restrictions. Public transport services connecting Kathmandu with different parts of the country have been affected after key highways became impassable. According to Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office spokesperson SP Naresh Raj Subedi, landslides have obstructed multiple sections of both the Prithvi Highway and the BP Highway. The Pharping-Hetauda route remains open only to smaller vehicles. At Kathmandu's Gongabu New Bus Park, long-distance public transport services were suspended from Thursday evening as worsening road conditions stranded buses in the capital. The Nepal Transport Entrepreneurs National Federation has appealed to transport operators and drivers to coordinate with security agencies and verify road conditions before travelling, warning that further rainfall could trigger additional landslides. Prithvi Highway, Narayangadh-Muglin closed Authorities have extended the closure of the Prithvi Highway and the Narayangadh-Muglin road section until further notice due to landslides and ongoing rainfall. Chitwan Chief District Officer Ganesh Aryal said the roads were initially closed overnight but the restriction was extended as weather conditions failed to improve. More than 10,000 vehicles use the Narayangadh-Muglin section daily, while over 14,000 vehicles travel on the Prithvi Highway each day. Several sections of the highway network in Chitwan and Dhading have been blocked by fresh landslides. BP Highway blocked, night travel restricted The BP Highway has been blocked by landslides at Charseybesi and Gimdi in Roshi Rural Municipality of Kavrepalanchok since early Friday morning. Authorities have imposed night-time travel restrictions on the highway from 5pm to 5am through Sept. 28, warning that daytime traffic could also be suspended if river levels and landslide risks increase. Other major road restrictions The Kaligandaki Corridor's Rudrabeni-Purtighat section in Gulmi has been completely blocked after a landslide at Rakse in Kaligandaki Rural Municipality-2. The Patikhola stream in the same rural municipality has also risen, disrupting transport. Vehicles and passengers travelling towards Baglung, Palpa, Butwal and Pokhara have been stranded along the route. The Kanti Lokpath has been obstructed at three locations towards Lalitpur due to landslides, affecting transport from Hetauda. In Khotang, night-time traffic on the Mid-Hill Highway section from Chakhewabhanjyang to Jayaramghat has been prohibited from 7 pm to 5 am, except for essential-service vehicles, in view of the forecast of heavy rainfall through September 27. Rolpa has imposed a night-time travel ban on major and local roads from 5 pm to 6 am from Thursday through Sunday. All sections of the Madan Bhandari Highway in the district will remain closed around the clock. The administration has also restricted night traffic on the Sahid Marg and Sulichaur-Liwang roads. Rukum East has prohibited all types of vehicles from operating at night on major highways and internal roads until further notice. Authorities have asked vehicles to operate during the day only after assessing weather and road conditions. Authorities have advised people to avoid non-essential travel, especially at night, monitor weather updates, and move immediately to safer areas if signs of flooding or landslide activity emerge. Special caution has been recommended for children, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, pregnant women and people with health conditions, while households have been advised to keep food supplies, medicines, livestock and important documents in secure locations in preparation for possible emergencies.
