KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 29 At least 12 people have died and one remains missing after rain-induced landslides struck different parts of Baglung district over the past three days, according to police. The latest fatalities occurred at Sipa in Tarakhola Rural Municipality-5, where a landslide buried a house, killing 55-year-old Dil Bahadur Pun and his 79-year-old mother-in-law Narmaya Roka, said District Police Office Chief SP Phanindra Prasai. Pun's wife, two sons and daughter-in-law were injured in the incident and received treatment after being rescued from the debris. Police said one person died in Tarakhola on Saturday, while four people were killed and one remains missing in Tamankhola Rural Municipality. Another five people lost their lives in Nisikhola Rural Municipality, bringing the district's total death toll to 12. Gandaki government announces relief Meanwhile, the Gandaki Provincial Government has decided to provide Rs 100,000 to each family that lost a member in recent floods and landslides in Baglung and Myagdi. Provincial government spokesperson and Finance Minister Jit Bahadur Sherchan said affected families would also receive Rs 25,000 for funeral expenses. The provincial government has begun collecting details of deaths, infrastructure damage and property losses across the province as part of preparations for reconstruction and rehabilitation programmes. Floods disrupt drinking water supply In a separate impact of the ongoing rainfall, floods have damaged major drinking water infrastructure, disrupting supplies to approximately 4,500 consumers in Baglung Bazaar since Sunday. According to the Baglung Municipal Water Supply and Consumers' Institution, floodwaters severely damaged the main pipeline near Hanumanmauwa in Baglung Municipality-3, which transports water from the Kailampokhari lift system to storage tanks at Suldanda and Mushyaswara. Additional damage was reported on pipelines carrying water from the Rithekhola source along the Tityang-Bhakunde border and the Bhundikhola source in Kathekhola Rural Municipality. Institution secretary Jeevan Acharya said all four major water sources supplying Baglung Bazaar were affected by the heavy rainfall and resulting floods. Pipelines were washed away at multiple points, while parts of the distribution system also sustained significant damage. Around 80 metres of pipeline at Rithekhola was swept away by floodwaters. Acting chairperson Haribahadur GC said repair work on the Rithekhola pipeline has already been completed, while restoration is continuing on other damaged sections to resume normal water supply as soon as possible. The latest fatalities and infrastructure losses add to the growing toll of heavy rainfall, floods and landslides affecting several districts across Gandaki Province.
