KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 13 From becoming Nepal's first male tennis player with an official International Tennis Federation ranking to competing on the ATP Challenger Tour, Abhishek Bastola has spent much of his career opening doors that had never before been crossed by a Nepali tennis player. The 29-year-old from Pokhara added another milestone in September 2026 when he became the first Nepali player to compete in an ATP Challenger Tour qualifying event, entering the men's singles draw in Phan Thiet, Vietnam. The achievement is the latest in a career built largely outside Nepal, where the absence of a professional tennis circuit has forced aspiring players to seek opportunities abroad. Bastola has represented Nepal at four Asian Games and holds Nepal's record for Davis Cup singles victories. During Nepal's Davis Cup debut in 2023, he became the first Nepali player to win a match in the competition and remained unbeaten in singles across the 2023 and 2024 editions. His rise on the international circuit began gathering momentum in 2023 when he became the first Nepali male player to earn an official ITF world ranking. He later achieved a career-high ranking of 1,217 and continued competing on the ITF World Tennis Tour and UTR Pro Tennis Tour. Beyond professional tournaments, Bastola also became the first Nepali tennis player to compete in the NCAA Division I collegiate system on a full tennis scholarship in the United States. He studied and played at the University of Texas at Arlington before graduating from Saint Mary's College of California. Another notable chapter came at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, where Bastola served as an official ATP and WTA hitting partner in 2024 and 2025, gaining experience alongside some of the world's top tennis professionals. While his achievements have brought unprecedented visibility to Nepali tennis, Bastola says his long-term goal is to create opportunities for future generations. His career reflects both the challenges of pursuing professional tennis from Nepal and the growing possibilities for Nepali athletes on the international stage.
