KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 14 Nepal has secured a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term after winning 173 votes in the General Assembly, the highest among countries elected from the Asia-Pacific group. The election, held at UN headquarters in New York, marks Nepal's third term on the 47-member council following its previous memberships in 2018–2020 and 2021–2023. A total of 180 votes were cast in the election. Nepal's Permanent Mission to the United Nations said the result reflected international confidence in the country's commitment to multilateralism, human rights, international law and a rules-based global order. The mission pledged to work with member states and partners to promote human dignity, inclusion, social justice and equitable development. Established in 2006 and based in Geneva, the Human Rights Council is the UN's principal body for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. It monitors human rights situations, reviews the records of member states and helps advance international cooperation on rights issues. Nepal's election gives the country a renewed platform to contribute to global discussions on human rights, equality and inclusion while also carrying responsibilities to uphold and advance the commitments it supports internationally.
