KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 20 Mahanawami, the ninth day of Bada Dashain, is being observed across Nepal today with special worship of Goddess Durga, offerings at temples and traditional animal sacrifices. Devotees are offering jamara, which was sown during Ghatasthapana, and reciting sacred texts, including the Durga Saptasati and Devi Stotra, at homes and temples. Those who do not practise animal sacrifice offer fruits and vegetables to the goddess. According to Hindu scriptures, Goddess Chamunda killed the demon Raktabij on Mahanawami, making the day significant for the worship of Durga. Goats, ducks, roosters and male buffaloes are sacrificed at various goddess temples as part of the traditional observances. Security forces also perform Kot Puja, or the worship of armouries, on the occasion. The Taleju Temple at Hanumandhoka in Kathmandu is opened to the public for worship of Goddess Tulaja Bhawani only on Mahanawami. Members of the Newar community also worship Bhimsen, a Hindu deity, with traditional rituals that may include animal sacrifices.
