DHANGADHI, NOVEMBER 3 A three-day tourism festival aimed at promoting the natural, cultural and economic potential of the Api Himal region has begun at Pilkand, the base camp of Api Himal in Darchula district. Organised by Api Himal Rural Municipality, the festival runs from November 3 to 5 and seeks to showcase the area's tourism attractions to national and international audiences, according to local officials. The opening day featured traditional cultural processions and presentations of literary works related to the Api region, highlighting local identity, heritage and indigenous traditions. Organisers say the event is designed not only to attract visitors but also to preserve cultural practices that are gradually disappearing. Sports and entertainment activities have also been incorporated into the programme. Friendly volleyball and cricket competitions are scheduled for the second day, followed by performances by local and national artists. The final day will feature yoga and meditation sessions, a climate dialogue and a closing ceremony focused on environmental awareness. Known for its spectacular mountain landscapes, the Api region is also rich in traditional culture, distinctive dress, folk instruments and Deuda music. Local officials hope the festival will help draw attention to these assets while creating wider tourism opportunities for communities in the area. The region is also renowned for products such as yarsagumba, panchaule medicinal herbs, buckwheat, local white beans, cliff honey and traditional sheep- and chyangra-wool rugs. However, limited market access has often prevented producers from receiving fair prices for their goods. Surrounded by peaks including Api Himal (7,132m), Jethi Bahurani and Nampa, the area lies within the Api Nampa Conservation Area, making it one of western Nepal's emerging destinations for mountain tourism and nature-based travel. Organisers say the festival is intended to promote both tourism and environmental conservation while helping local communities benefit more directly from the region's natural and cultural resources.
