SC upholds businessmen's detention

By Himalayan News Service

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court today upheld the detention of two businessmen who were involved in the business of Shiwashakti Kawach (armour to secure fortune). A division bench of Justices Khil Raj Regmi and Tahir Ali Ansari upheld the detention of Hridaya Jung Singh and Madhav Bikram Singh. Stating that they were being held to investigate about their involvement in the alleged crime of not paying tax to the government, the bench maintained that the detention was legal and the apex court need not intervene. The Department of Revenue Investigation had imposed Rs 16.1 million as tax to them for their involvement in the business of the kawach. Since they refused to pay the bail amount, the department sent them into detention. A habeas corpus was filed seeking the apex court order to release them. Advocate Amrit Kumar KC moved the SC seeking their release.
