KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal today urged political parties to be serious about tackling the adverse impacts of climate change. Addressing an interaction organised by Nepal Intellectual Council, Nepal said, “There is a need of national consensus to fight impacts of climate change. All political parties should come up with a common agenda on the issue.” He said the Ministry of Environment would be empowered for lobbying in the international arena. Citing experience of Copenhagen climate meet, he said, “Without a strong team, it is not possible to debate on the issue so the ministry will strengthen itself with team of experts and experienced officials to handle the issue.” PM Nepal also urged intellectuals to come up with ideas to cope up with the climate issue. He said, “Climate change is a global issue. We should join hands to reduce its impacts on our communities.” Dr Dinesh Chandra Devkota, member, National Planning Commission and general secretary of the Nepal Intellectual Council highlighted the impacts of climate change in the country and said, “We should come up with clear ideas as to how to adapt to the changing climate.” Intellectuals representing various sectors discussed the global agenda in the context of Nepal and combating its adverse effects.
