Maoists to bat for people's statute

KATHMANDU: State committees of the Unified CPN-Maoist have stressed the need for a people’s revolt if their fight for the people’s constitution failed. During the reporting session of their two-day national cadres’ training that began today at Kharipati, the secretaries of 13 state committees stressed the need to fight for people-oriented constitution. According to sources, the secretaries claimed that the Maoist movement was attracting people and making the party stronger. Vice-chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha ‘Prakash’ said the state committees reported that the party had left Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML far behind. He said the state committees complained of corruption among the party cadres and claimed that party leaders and cadres had become more materialistic. Bhojpura Sub-State Committee raised the issue of security. At least six of its leaders were killed during recent attacks. The national cadres’ training has been divided into five sessions: condolence to the martyrs, reporting, training, interaction and conclusion. Of the 18 state committees, 13 have already reported and five special state committees would report on Thursday. Party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal inaugurated the gathering. General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa said the gathering would dwell on several issues including the need to continue movement and whether the party should forge an alliance with other nationalist forces or not. One participant said the party had decided to give the responsibility to deal with the media to Vice-chairman ‘Prakash’.

KATHMANDU: UCPN-Maoist cadres misbehaved with The Himalayan Times correspondent Tika R Pradhan when he reached the venue of National Training of the party at Kharipati on Wednesday afternoon to cover the inaugural session of the training. The cadres forcibly took Pradhan out of the venue using vulgar language. Arun Baral of Jana Astha weekly also alleged that they threw him out of the venue.
