LONDON: Anne Hathaway is surprised she is an actress as she expected a life of waiting tables and paying off debts.

Anne Hathaway didn't expect to be an actress.

The 'Alice in Wonderland' star admits she thought she had a life of restaurant work and debt ahead of her when she was younger.

Anne said: "I thought I was going to be waitressing and have tons of student loans. I'm thrilled.

"Right now, I just feel like I'm in a glorified acting program. I get to learn drama from Meryl Streep, then I get to run around and learn comedy from Steve Carell. It's kind of insane.

"Acting really, really is the only thing I'm interested in doing. Even if I was acting in a church basement theatre for the rest of my life, I would still enjoy it."

The 27-year-old beauty also confirms she doesn't mind putting on and losing weight for roles.

She told Look: "The thing is I'm an actress. Therefore, I must lose weight or gain weight depending on the job. "For 'Bride Wars' where I lost quite a bit of weight by going to the gym and watching what I ate. Then for 'Rachel Getting Married' I put on ten pounds of pure bagel weight!"
