DANG: Members of the consumers' committee of the Kalika community forest in Lalmatiya have built a care-home for old animals. The forest consumers executed the plan aiming to solve the problems created by old animals which are left uncared by the locals. The consumers had initiated construction works of the care-home two years ago. The care-home has been providing shelter, food and care to the old animals. Consumers' Committee secretary Moti Adhikari said, "We provide shelter and care to the animals which are left uncared by the locals," adding, "It has helped protect the crops in the field and also provide care to the old animals." The members of the forest consumers committee have now been working for the conservation of endangered vultures. They have also developed the area of Kalika community forest area as the shelter of the vultures. Secretary Adhikari said, "We have now started to conserve the vultures as well." The idea of vulture conservation was developed after villagers started feeding the corpse of the dead animals to the vultures. Adhikari said that seven species of vultures out of the total eight species found in the country had been spotted in the area. Dilaram Kumal, an employee at the office of the consumers' committee, said that the project of building care-home for the old animals was implemented with the help of WWF Nepal, Terai Landscape Project and Birds Conservation Nepal.
