Kathmandu, May 23:
Human rights activist and legal experts today urged the government to protect the image of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) after the first amendment of NHRC Act 2053 BS took place through an ordinance giving the authority to a committee headed by Chief Justice to appoint new NHRC office bearers. “It is not only a question of running NHRC but keeping its image intact,” said outgoing member Kapil Shrestha. There is a serious question on how to appoint the NHRC office bearers, including its chairman, after the termination of outgoing members’ tenure on May 26. The King issued an ordinance to amend Clause 4(2) of the NHRC Act to constitute a committee under the CJ to recommend the NHRC office bearers.
