NHRC finds 'genuine victims' deprived of relief

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has commented that government and non-government agencies could not cooperate with each other in post-earthquake relief operations. Speaking at a meeting of the Social Justice and Human Rights Committee of the Parliament on Wednesday, the NHRC officials said many of genuine earthquake-affected people were deprived of relief assistance due to lack of cooperation. NHRC officials also pointed out that the government needs to stay alert to protect citizens from floods and landslides during the monsoon. Likewise, some people of the affected regions were provided with substandard food whereas women and children were at the risk trafficking in the post-disaster situation, they added. NHRC Chairman Anup Raj Sharma and members Prakash Wasti, Sudeep Pathak, Mohana Ansari and Govinda Sharma Paudyal had informed the House panel Chairman Sushil Kumar Shrestha and other lawmakers about post-quake human rights situation in the country, at the meeting held at Singhadurbar today. On the occasion, Sharma said the national human rights watchdog has been summoning concerned government authorities to inquire about their performance in relief works. Meanwhile, the NHRC officials also pointed out that the government needs to stay alert to protect citizens from floods and landslides during the monsoon.
